One of today’s leading areas of research which overlaps academia, healthcare, and industry, is the field of biomechanics, and specifically biomechanical engineering. Biomechanics applies the fields of several areas of mechanical and engineering sciences to analyze biological systems. The need to track 3D spatial data in this field is often solved with a MicroScribe® portable digitizing system.
One example of a biomechanical engineering system utilizing the MicroScribe system is simVITRO, a hardware neutral robotic testing platform used primarily for orthopedic biomechanics research. To perform this testing, spatial relationships between the robot, load cell, motion capture system, and the specimen anatomical landmarks need to be defined. The Microscribe product is well suited to fit into the simVITRO framework by providing 3D spatial digitizing capabilities. No modification to the Microscribe hardware necessary for integration with simVITRO the arm can be mounted directly into the work volume (per Revware recommendations).
The simVITRO product offering includes software drivers which communicate with the MicroScribe digitizing system using the API provided by Revware. To the end user, the combination of a MicroScribe digitizer and the simVITRO software provides a seamless integrated solution for the simVITRO testing environment.
The simVITRO system, utilizing the MicroScribe arm, has been instrumental in moving the field of biomechanics forward. Publication of papers in such industry periodicals as Journal of Biomechanical engineering and Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine can attest to this.
